the collection
This collection of experimental costumes explore the illusion of bodily transformation through visceral emotion and physical horror. The imagined reality of each character is one of distress and vulnerability as they transform from human to creature. Their present state is a blend of both human and animalistic traits that creates feelings for the viewer of both sympathy and discomfort. Intentionally made to look grotesque, these creatures enter the audience’s current physical space, forcing them to acknowledge their emotions as something personally tangible. Ultimately, it is the perceived sentience of these characters that makes their suffering all the more horrific.
Each mask is built from the inside out, from a wire frame, to paper mache tissue and finished with multidisciplinary finishings from resin glazing to added fur and other textiles. The masks each have articulated mouths to animate the wearers' speech, and highlight a visceral expression of their uncanny nature.
Each mask is paired with a collage of found and heavily edited/ repurposed textiles and preexisting garments. Multiple garments are dyed , cut, and frankensteined together to highlight each characters individuality.
